Not An Ounce of Guilt

Whenever there's a storm brewing, it's understood that I'd have to be prepared to work.  If it's a major storm, like Sandy, I usually don't make it back home for the night.  This past weekend was no different.  I wouldn't exactly classify this one as a big winter storm.  But, I was prepared to come in on my day off for coverage.

Lucky for me,  I didn't have to report for duty.  The bosses decided to throw me a bone!  Normally I'd feel guilty for not being there.  But, I didn't.  My hubby would clown me for having my nose buried in my laptop tracking the weather.  However, my computer remained in the off position the entire weekend (with the exception of writing this post, of course lol).  There was no Facebook post, no tweeting, no looking at the radar.  As far as I was concerned I was off the clock, and I couldn't be happier.  I may have had Christmas Day and New Year's Day off, but I've worked every other day in between this year.  It's time that Mama gets a break.

Being home this past weekend worked to our benefit.  My hubby had work, so the roles were reversed.  I got to spend the entire day with Princess and we had a blast.  We put together some of her Christmas gifts, and opened a couple as well.  We had fun goofing around too.

Most of my time is usually spent working.  Even though we only had raindrops where we live, it was still nice to weather the storm with my little girl.  Now my only hope is to make it home in time to ring in the New Year with my two favorite people.

Shabby Apple Giveway

With the New Year Year around the corner, I'm thinking of ways to improve my blog and myself for 2013.  I was able to accomplish all of my resolutions for 2012, with the exception of taking those photography classes.  But, that's ok.  I'm happy with my achievements.

To kick off the New Year, I want to work on getting my wardrobe game up.  I do most of my shopping online because waiting on line to make a purchase is out of the question.  I just don't have the time!

One of my favorite sites, ShabbyApple.com, has some pretty cool stuff.   I've always enjoyed finding sites like this that cater to women and children.  You can find fierce dresses for yourself, a loved one, or your little one at reasonable prices.

In honor of the New Year, I'll be giving away a $50 gift card to Shabby Apple as a thank you for all your support through 2012.  Because we don't want to leave anyone out, the company is also offering Weather Anchor Mama readers 10% off of your purchase by entering weatheranchormama10off
through 1/28/2013.  More details are included in the rafflecoptor below.  Good Luck!

Christmas 2012

Christmas day came and went so quickly. From the moment she woke up, all Princess wanted to do was open presents. It was so fun watching her rip open gifts. There were so many it became difficult to keep count after a while. We spent the bulk of the day playing with toys and reading books, before heading to Grandma's house.

Even though she refuse to open Santa gifts in the beginning, she later had a change of heart. Judging by the look on her face, I can tell she had a great time.

I can't remember the last time I got a protein treatment. I read about Aphogee and decided to give it a try. Here's what I think.

What if Your Tot is Scared of Santa?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't agree with the whole Santa thing.  But sometimes, you gotta be a team player and play along.  I've heard smart remarks regarding my lack of jumping for joy when the fat guy comes around the hood, or if I ask a question about him.  But what do ya expect?  I wasn't brought up that way.  I may not be up on the rules and such.  It doesn't make either of us right or wrong, good or bad.  We just have different opinions.  I think that it's important to respect other peoples belief and traditions.

However despite my anti- Santa thoughts, I'm willing to be a good sport.  I want my daughter to enjoy the holidays.  So if that means having her sit with good 'ol jolly Saint Nick, then I'm in.

When Princess's teacher informed me that Santa was visiting her class, I thought-"perfect."  We missed taking Santa pics these past couple of weeks because she had been feeling a little under the weather.  This would make up for it!  Miss Katherine even offered to take pics, and so did Princess's best friend's mom.

Check it out their reaction!

Apparently, they were both too scared to go near him.  I'm not sure if she's with this whole Santa thing either.  I hope I'm not rubbing off on her.  I asked Princess if she'd like to visit Santa again and sit in his lap for a pic.  She said, "no."  I won't force her to make a choice.  We'll try this again one more time this weekend and see what happens.  If she says no, then this whole Santa thing is a wrap.

P.S. If that's the case, I'll make sure she doesn't ruin it for the other kids.

Is your kid scared of Santa?

Tips for Taking Great Holiday Pics

Some people elect to have professional pics taken for the holidays. However, I'd rather save a few bucks by taking my own. Princess and I had fun snapping photos for our holiday card this past weekend.

We're cutting it pretty close this year. I'm hoping to get these babies out in time for Christmas. Our Christmas tree became the perfect backdrop for our holiday card. I was able to chose from a bunch of different designs and came up with this one. It's not too late to make your own! Here are some cool tips to help you get the best pics:

1. Keep it simple. It's important to not have a busy or distracting background. Our Christmas tree was the perfect backdrop.

2. Don't force it. I fell behind on making up Christmas cards because Princess wasn't feeling well. She wasn't up to smiling for the camera, so I didn't push the issue. If your kiddo is not up to posing, postpone your photo shoot. You'd get better pics with a happy child.

3. Make it fun! We played games, sang songs, and made faces. I didn't want this to be a chore for her. You can get your child to take cool pics when you incorporate the things they love.

4. The closer the better. Don't let your little one get lost in the background. Photos that are eye level and close up make the best cards.

5. Keep it short. No kid wants to be posing in front of the camera for hours. Princess and I were done with our shoot in less than a half hour.

Once your done with your photo shoot, choose your favs, and order away! I love to order online. But if you're pressed for time, you can hit up your local drug store and make your purchase.

Have you sent out your holiday cards yet?

Inspired by the Tragedy in Newtown, CT

These past few days have been extremely rough. I can't stop thinking about the victims of the Sandle Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. When I heard the news that innocent 6 and 7 year old children were brutally murdered along with 7 other adults, I was crushed. It makes me appreciate being a parent like never before.

When it comes to Princess, I'd do anything to protect her. The thought of something bad happening to her scares me beyond words. It's always been my mission to be the best parent possible. In some weird way I document Princess's life because you never know what can happen. Let's be clear, I'm not trying to put out negative energy. But, you just never know. My mission is to appreciate the time I have with my daughter because this can all be taken away at the drop of a hat.  So, I'll continue to post pics of Princess.  I'll keep sharing my experiences as I struggle to balance career and motherhood.

This tragedy could have happened anywhere. I'm left feeling grief for the victims and their families. But, I'm also left feeling inspired. I'm inspired to be a better human being. I'm inspired to be a better wife and mom. I pray for those who lost their lives in Newtown, and I pray for their family.

Let's all hold our kids a little extra tight tonight, and pray this never happens again.

Oh How Time Flies

It was just a couple of years ago when Princess started daycare.  It seemed like yesterday.  It's hard to believe now that it wasn't my first choice.  Initially, I approached neighbors and close friends to find out if they could babysit.  When everyone turned us down, daycare became the only other option.  Now that I think about it, it should have been the first.

Princess has made so many friends and she adores her teachers.  The one down side to being around so many kids is all the viruses that a child can get.  Despite it being a germ feast, I think it's the best decision her dad and I made.  Besides, it helps to build her immune system.

Every day I ask her, "how was school?" She says "good."  Princess loves telling me about her day, and I get a kick out of watching her interact with her friends.

The other day I was sorting through her school pics, and realized how much my baby has grown since she started school.

How to Refresh a Wash-N-Go During the Winter

Earlier this year I blogged about Princess's  haircare regimen.  Since turning two, it's been growing like crazy.  Now her spouting curls are in much need of something new during these cold months.  I was introduced to Curly Q's For Kids, and decided to give it a try.

To freshen up Princess's wash and go, I normally would have to rinse her hair with conditioner, detangle, scrunch, and allow it to air dry.  But with the weather getting colder here in New York, I want to avoid wetting her hair on a daily basis.

This is what her hair looks like when she wakes up in the morning.  It's a bit frizzy and tangled.  On weekends, I braid her hair to help minimize knotting and frizzing.  But during the week, she hits the sack as is.  She refuses the satin bonnets and scarves.  A satin pillow case is the only option we have right now.

I'm also big on making sure to only use gentle and natural products on our hair.  The Curls line is sulfate, mineral oil, silicone, and paraben free.

To help redefine her curls, I apply about two quarter size amounts of the Curl Moisturizer and Detangler, gently remove tangles with a wide tooth comb, and scrunch.

Curly Q's Moisturizer/Detangler

Curly Q Custard

After application, I take about less than a dime size amount of the Curly Q Custard through her hair.  I only use a little of this product because Princess's hair is fine.  Adding too much may way down her locks.

Once I've completed the process, I style her hair.  I love braiding and adding cute accessories.  Her hair  usually stays frizz free, moisturized, and soft to the touch throughout the day.

Do you switch up you kiddos hair routine by season?

Special Moment Captured

Someone told me that it's been a while since I posted a pic of Princess.  Come to think about it, this person is so right.  I normally take snapshots everyday of my baby girl.  But with the cold temps and a busy schedule, I've been slipping.

She's been feeling a little under the weather lately.  In fact, she took a day off from daycare for some much needed rest and relaxation with Daddy.  Thankfully, I was able to make it home in time to tuck her in.  She was super excited.  It's hard to tell in this photo that she wasn't feeling well.

I love capturing special moments with Princess. How often do you snap pics of your little one?
